Graham Wainer, CEO - Investment Management, provides some insights from his session in our South Africa conferences, including the likely winners and losers in a changing an investment environment characterised by ‘polycrisis’.
One can say we live in interesting times,
but I think where we are now is particularly interesting.
And I was struck recently
to hear President Trump describing this as a golden age.
We beg to differ very, very slightly.
because what we are seeing really is a continuation of
what we've seen for a number of years,
which is really a perma and poly crisis.
The world is inundated with crises,
and our job as investment managers is really to try
and make sense of the world, to make sense of these various,
opportunities and threats and to invest cleverly
and smartly on behalf of our clients.
And we do that in a way by trying to identify the winners
and the losers that will ultimately emerge
from this ever changing pattern amid these tectonic blocks,
whether it's China, Europe,
and America it's often said,
the the future is not what it used to be.
And we see some interesting opportunities on our
horizon, and that's what our job is to do, is
to take advantage of these for clients
and to avoid the pitfalls.
