At 220 years old, Freeman’s is America’s oldest auction house and one of the country’s first family-owned businesses. Having remained in the hands of the Freeman family for six generations, the company has much in common with Stonehage Fleming, a business with the Fleming family – now in its seventh generation – at its heart.
Freeman’s historical role in the development and growth of business is not the only thing the auction house shares with Stonehage Fleming, according to Peter Rosenberg, Senior Partner and Chairman of Stonehage Fleming Americas. “Like Stonehage Fleming, Freeman’s has a special connection to Scotland”, he told guests last week at a post-summer networking event hosted by the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia, held at Freeman’s and sponsored by Stonehage Fleming. “While their Chairman Alasdair Nichol hails from Scotland, Freeman’s also has a long-standing strategic alliance with Lyon & Turnbull, Scotland’s oldest auction house.”
A mutual passion for art as a cornerstone of the two businesses, for Peter, meant that the evening “represented the weaving together of many common interests, including art and transatlantic business growth.”
Stonehage Fleming is the largest independent multi-family office in the EMEA region specialising in a wide range of services tailored to the unique needs of wealthy families, including investment management, succession and governance, tax advice and wealth planning. “With a strong presence in 14 jurisdictions and offices in Philadelphia, Miami, and Toronto, we are well equipped to assist wealthy families in the US and around the world with their complex affairs across their financial, social, cultural and intellectual capital, what we call the Four Pillars of Capital”, said Peter.
Very often, this incorporates the management of a broad range of assets including art. “Art has always been close to the heart of our organisation. The Fleming Collection – the finest collection of Scottish art outside public institutions – is managed by the Fleming-Wyfold Art Foundation and remains closely aligned with the values and history of our business, ensuring the succession of several pillars of the Fleming family’s capital,” said Peter.
